What Makes Coalitions Work? New Research Reveals the Secrets Behind Effective Collective Action

We're thrilled to share the results of a groundbreaking research project examining what really drives coalition effectiveness in youth sports equity work. In partnership with researchers at Temple University, University of Washington, Louisiana State University, and Adelphi University, the Coalitions for Sport Equity conducted a comprehensive study across 14 coalitions, 700+ community organizations, and 23 cities to understand the conditions that enable coalitions to create real systems change.

What We Discovered

The research reveals that effective coalitions operate on a foundation of trust, clarity, and intentional relationship-building. We uncovered 13 key findings that challenge conventional wisdom about coalition work and offer practical guidance for leaders:

  • Funding creates momentum. When coalitions provide resources to members, it catalyzes significantly stronger engagement and perceptions of collective organizing.

  • Clarity strengthens confidence. Members who understand the coalition's direction, goals, and structure rate effectiveness substantially higher across all measures.

  • Equity fuels impact. Inclusive processes and trust enable both efficiency and meaningful impact—they're not trade-offs.

  • Relationship-building drives change. The "invisible work" of coordination and connection is not separate from impact; it's central to it.

  • Growth expands reach and legitimacy. Larger coalitions command greater respect, though scaling requires strategic intention around engagement.

And nine more findings that illuminate other key dynamics of coalition work.

Why This Matters

Coalition-building is relatively new to the youth sports space. For years, backbone organizations and coalition leaders have operated with limited research to guide their work. We were often left asking: Are we doing this right? What should we focus on? How do we explain our value to funders and members?

This research provides evidence-based answers grounded in real coalition experiences. More importantly, it reframes coalition work as a legitimate and powerful strategy for systems change—not a nice-to-have, but a strategic necessity for addressing inequity in youth sports.

About the Research

This mixed methods research project examined 14 local coalitions across the Coalitions for Sport Equity network, representing 700+ community-based organizations across 14 cities. The research included 18 backbone leader interviews, 200+ member surveys, and 60 in-depth member interviews. The study was conducted in partnership with academic researchers at Temple University, University of Washington, Louisiana State University, and Adelphi University.
